Head Injury may be associated with concussion in sports, military blast injury, whiplash injury, or vehicular accidents. These injuries are associated with varying degrees of impaired brain function. The brain, a complex organ, can show injury in ways that might not be that obvious.

    Sports Concussions

Concussions are traumatic head injuries that occur from both mild and severe blows to the head. Some head injuries may appear to be mild but research is finding that concussions can have serious, long-term effects, especially repeat head injuries or cumulative concussions.

The physical and neurocognitive symptoms associated with these blast injuries are also very similar to the sequelae of sports concussions and mTBI in motor vehicle accidents. Blast injury, however, is more complex than sports concussions or accident concussions.

    Accident Concussions

A traumatic brain injury often occurs due to the sudden acceleration/deceleration of the brain within the skull (whiplash from car accident). A rotational force makes matters far worse as it rapidly twists the brain. This commonly occurs in a rear-end car crash.
